|International Museum Day (IMD) is held every year around the 18 May and aims to increase public awareness of the role of museums in developing society. Museum and Gallery Services Queensland (M&GSQ) was pleased to announce the return of Peer Talk as its IMD event in 2011. This replaced the Museums Alight! program coordinated by M&GSQ for International Museum Day from 2005–2010.|
Peer Talk was held on Wednesday 18 May 2011. The Mercy Heritage Centre in Brisbane was the focus for productive exhibition criticism by museum and gallery professionals, including those involved with developing and designing exhibitions. For further information about the event, go to the Past Professional Development Events section here.
More info on the 2012 Peer Talk will be available shortly.
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) theme for 2012 is Museums in a Changing World. New challenges, new inspirations.
Today, the world is changing faster than ever. New technology delivers new ideas, gigabytes of information, news of an increasingly unstable climate, all shared by social media. Modern museums must compete for an audible voice against the furious pace of this background.
Museums in a Changing World is recognition that institutions are faced with interpreting, and existing in, a field that is becoming increasingly fluid. Each may face a unique set of goals, interests and audiences.

Museums Alight! offered cultural and historical organisations throughout Queensland the opportunity to showcase their collections, historical venues and stories to the public while taking part in the global celebration of International Museum Day.
