The exhibition Fireworks is comprised of over 50 works by historic and contemporary artists featuring paintings, works on paper, photography and sculpture and is accompanied by a colour catalogue and an education kit.

Summer in Australia is known across the country as the bushfire season. The recent overwhelming conflagration across the eastern states has had a profound effect on the national psyche. Yet fire has been an integral part of national life well before the arrival of European settlers. Indigenous inhabitants have used fire as a land-management tool for tens of thousands of years.
Fireworks is an incendiary display tracing the destructive/creative nature of fire in the Australian experience. This is a timely exhibition considering that, as a nation emerging from the dual devastation of drought and fire, there is a genuine need and desire to re-appraise the limited knowledge we have of our country’s fragile resources and landscape systems. By tracing the interplay between humans and landscape in relation to fire, the exhibition illuminates the character of both.
Fireworks traces the impact fire has had on a diverse group of Australian artists including Eugene von Guerard, Arthur Streeton, Sidney Nolan, Fred Williams, Claudine Marzik, Ronnie Tjampijinpa, John Firth Smith and Wendy Sharpe that reflect experiences in the bush, the suburbs and the cities.
This exhibition is organised by Artspace Mackay and supported by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government Program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of cultural material across Australia.
The fully illustrated exhibition catalogue has been supported by the Gordon Darling Foundation and The Thomas Foundation and includes essays by Gavin Wilson and Alan Krell.
