Developing Engaging Learning Resource Kits for Teachers and School StudentsBack to top

David Milne, Manager of Strategic Learning, Allan Morrison , Senior Project Officer: Museum Magnet Schools, Christine Milne, Senior Project Officer: Biodiversity, all part of the Strategic Learning Team, along with Jo Forsyth, Manager (Loans), from the Queensland Museum will present information about the development and design of museum learning resources.

This masterclass also aims to increase awareness of innovative possibilities for resource development that meets the expectations of schools teachers and students. Case studies of rationale, appropriateness for target audiences, use of learning styles and evaluation will illustrate the session. Emphasis will be given to forging collaborative links with co-contributors to the resource kit project: graphics specialists; photographers, community members etc.

Group exercises will enable participants to gain an idea of the level of detailed project planning that goes into developing a kit from initial embryonic idea to fruition. The development of simpler object based learning resource kits will also be explored as a first stepping stone for participants who are new to this field. Marketing and evaluation of the resources will also be covered.

Understanding and Enhancing Visitor Experiences Through Evaluation and Visitor ResearchBack to top

Dr Jan Packer is a Senior Research Officer in the School of Tourism at the University of Queensland. Jan teaches in Interpretation and Visitor Research in the UQ Museum Studies program, and is involved in several major visitor research projects in Australia, USA, Canada and China. This masterclass will enable you to understand the principles and methods of visitor and exhibition evaluation as well as to develop new insights into museum and gallery visitors’ needs, experiences and behaviour.

Intended learning outcomes of this session include appreciating the need for a visitor-centred approach to museum practice; understanding the principles of visitor research and exhibit evaluation and applying a range of techniques for collecting visitor data.

Step by Step through the Web: Building an effective online strategy for your organisationBack to top

Joy Suliman, Project Manager – Collections Australia Network (CAN), will provide guidance on improving your organisation’s web presence and will broaden your knowledge and skills in applying low-cost and practical ideas in the online environment. The session will also include advice on creating good web content and engaging your audiences with social media such as blogs, wikis and podcasts.

Intended outcomes of this masterclass include increased awareness of the digital environment; better understanding of the scope and possibilities of the web environment for your organisation; a template for creating an online strategy for your organisation and strategies that you can apply immediately.

Dr Carol Scott, Manager of Evaluation and Audience Research at the Powerhouse Museum will present a masterclass with the express purpose of empowering the museums and galleries sector to clearly articulate the worth of museums and galleries to bureaucrats and politicians, using a typology of value supported by evidence. This topic is also the subject of Carol’s PhD in which she has conducted primary research with the professional sector and the general visiting and non-visiting public.

Outcomes from taking this masterclass could include learning the language of value: value, benefits, outcomes, impact; identifying the beneficiaries of value; clarifying types of values and developing evidence of qualitative and quantitative value.
