Creating Child Friendly Cultural Spaces

A FREE seminar presented in association with Museum & Gallery Services Queensland

Where: Tony Gould Gallery, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Southbank
When: Thursday 12 June 5pm- 6.30pm
Part of The 3rd CHILD FRIENDLY CITIES SYMPOSIUM
Brought to you by QPAC, Museum of Brisbane and Griffith University
at QPAC’s Out of the Box Festival for 3 to 8 year olds

Today we expect that child friendly cities will host child friendly museums. What do children and carers really think about their experiences with arts and culture in our museums?

Hear members of the Youth Advisory Group for The Edge, a dedicated space for young people across the Cultural Centre, report on their visits to museums and galleries. What do these children expect from child friendly museums? How do they value their early childhood visitor experiences? Hear museum & gallery professionals talk candidly about their insights as parents of children aged 3-8 on family visits to museums. How responsive are museums to children’s needs?

What opportunities do child friendly museums provide for meaningful experiences with objects or art works? What recollections do participants have of these significant interactive moments of aesthetic, cognitive, emotional, collaborative engagement?

Hannah Billett and Raya Mawson-Sargeant, the youngest Edgy Advisors as museum and gallery reviewers in conversation with Collette Brennan, Creative Director The Edge, State Library of Queensland and Sandra Fields, Fieldworx
