Peer Talk was an annual event in our Industry Development calendar between 2001-2006. The State Library of Queensland, Queensland Art Gallery, The University of Queensland Art Museum, The Workshops Rail Museum, Museum of Brisbane, Queensland Museum (South Bank) have all participated in past events remarkable for the cooperation of the institution; the openness and professionalism of the exhibition team/s; the professionalism and independence of the exhibition reviewers and the commitment of all participants (speakers and audience) to the development of a culture of exhibition review by museum and gallery/collections peers.

The rationale for the event is the development of a culture of productive formal exhibition criticism by museum and gallery professionals, including all those involved with developing and designing exhibitions. Peer Talk was inspired by the Exhibition Review sessions initiated by Kathleen MacLean at the Annual American Association of Museum (AAM) Conferences and subsequently established as a regular feature of the annual Museums Australia Conferences. As Kathleen McLean, author of Planning for People in Museum Exhibitions, proposed: “One way to look at museum exhibitions is through the practice of formal exhibition criticism, much like that practiced in the fields of literature, theatre, film and other communication and arts disciplines... exhibition criticism is most helpful when it is undertaken by practitioners with a deep understanding of exhibitions.”

The theme for International Museum Day 2011 was Museum and Memory.
